The Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver entered the race carrying confidence after earlier becoming the first Toyota driver to secure pole position. While expectations were already high heading into the weekend, few could have predicted just how significant the race would become for both Wood and the manufacturer.

As the lights went out, Wood produced a strong launch and immediately controlled the opening run toward Turn One. The New Zealander settled into an early rhythm while defending from immediate pressure behind, as the field navigated the opening laps cleanly around the technical Taupō circuit.

Early in the race, Wood looked comfortable at the front and consistently delivered strong lap times. However, Triple Eight’s Will Brown soon emerged as a serious challenger and remained within striking distance as the opening stint developed. Brown repeatedly closed the gap and began applying pressure through the braking zones and technical sections of the circuit.

As pit stops began unfolding, strategy quickly became the defining factor of the race. Matt Payne attempted an undercut strategy, while other teams searched for ways to gain positions through tyre advantages and pit timing. During the second round of stops, Wood briefly found himself under pressure after the strategy cycle unexpectedly placed teammate Chaz Mostert ahead on track. Wood’s frustration over team radio reflected the tension of the moment as victory suddenly looked uncertain.

However, the New Zealander responded immediately. Showing impressive pace in the closing stages, Wood worked his way back through and regained control of the race while Mostert defended strongly against Broc Feeney behind him. The battle allowed Wood to create a valuable advantage as the final laps approached.

Crossing the finish line first, Wood secured a result that represented far more than a race victory. It was Toyota’s first Supercars win and an unforgettable moment achieved on home soil.

For Wood, the emotion was clear. For Toyota, history had officially been made.
