Brodie Kostecki has continued his impressive championship form after securing victory in the opening race of the New Zealand Supercars round at Taupō International Motorsport Park, delivering a controlled performance in changing conditions and immediately placing himself at the centre of the weekend storylines.

Heading into Taupō, teams arrived facing a major challenge. The circuit’s combination of fast direction changes, heavy braking zones and unpredictable weather had already created uncertainty throughout practice and qualifying sessions. Drivers spent much of the opening day searching for the ideal balance as temperatures and track conditions continued changing.

When the lights went out for the opening race, Kostecki made an excellent launch and immediately moved into position at the front of the field. However, unlike previous rounds, victory would not come easily.

Matt Payne immediately emerged as one of the strongest challengers and the New Zealand driver received enormous support from the home crowd as he pressured the Dick Johnson Racing Mustang throughout the opening laps. Broc Feeney also remained firmly involved in the leading battle as the front three quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field.

Behind the leaders, the action intensified throughout the midfield. Drivers attacked aggressively into the heavy braking zones, producing multiple side-by-side moments and several near misses as they searched for positions around the relatively narrow circuit.

A safety car midway through the race compressed the field and removed Kostecki’s developing advantage. Teams quickly reassessed strategies while drivers prepared for an intense restart that could potentially decide the outcome.

When racing resumed, Kostecki delivered a near-perfect restart and immediately created a small gap over the chasing drivers. Payne continued applying pressure in front of his home supporters and repeatedly reduced the margin, but Kostecki remained composed.

The closing stages saw both drivers trading fast lap times as the pressure increased. However, Kostecki’s tyre management and consistency ultimately proved decisive.

Crossing the finish line first, Kostecki secured another important victory and strengthened his championship position.

After Melbourne success and now a strong New Zealand start, rivals are quickly discovering that stopping Kostecki’s momentum is becoming increasingly difficult.
