Payne Produces Christchurch Masterclass With Dominant Home Victory

Matt Payne has delivered a commanding performance at the ITM Christchurch Super 440, producing one of the most dominant drives of the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship season to claim victory in Race 12 and reignite his championship momentum in front of a passionate New Zealand crowd. Payne won by more than 11 seconds in a race where he looked completely untouchable from start to finish.

After suffering heartbreak earlier in the weekend following a pit stop issue that denied him a potential race win, Payne entered Race 12 with unfinished business. The Penrite Racing driver had displayed exceptional pace throughout practice and qualifying but had little to show for his speed after earlier setbacks. Starting from the front row, Payne knew this was an opportunity to respond immediately.

When the lights went out, Payne launched cleanly and wasted no time asserting control over the race. Through the opening sequence of corners at Ruapuna Raceway, the Kiwi immediately established himself at the front while chaos unfolded deeper within the field as drivers fought aggressively for positions.

Behind Payne, the battle for podium places quickly intensified. Broc Feeney looked determined to keep himself within striking distance in both the race and the Jason Richards Trophy battle, while Ryan Wood, Brodie Kostecki and Kai Allen all remained locked in close combat. Multiple side by side moments throughout the midfield kept fans entertained as drivers searched for opportunities around the new Christchurch circuit.

As the race progressed, Payne simply drove away from the field. Lap after lap the Penrite Mustang continued extending its advantage, with the New Zealander appearing comfortable across every sector of the circuit. While other teams focused heavily on tyre management and strategy calls, Payne’s pace allowed him to maintain complete control.

Further behind, James Golding produced one of the standout performances of the race with a late charge through the field that eventually secured a surprise podium finish, while Feeney maintained second position after surviving intense pressure throughout the race.

As Payne crossed the finish line, the margin told the story. Winning by over 11 seconds, the Penrite Racing driver had delivered one of the most convincing victories seen all season.

For Payne, it was redemption after earlier disappointment. For Christchurch fans, it was another unforgettable moment during Supercars' first visit to New Zealand’s South Island.
