Matt Payne Clinches Thrilling Victory in Tasmania Supercars Showdown
In a race that will be etched in Supercars history, Matt Payne of Penrite Racing executed a masterful strategy to edge out Broc Feeney by a mere 0.05 seconds in Race 13 of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship at the Snowy River Caravans Tasmania Super 440.
Starting from 11th on the grid, Payne's team capitalized on a mid-race Safety Car by making a second compulsory pit stop, allowing him to run a remarkable 48-lap stint on a single set of Super Soft tyres. This bold move positioned Payne at the front, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish.

Feeney, driving for Red Bull Ampol Racing, showcased blistering pace throughout the weekend, setting the fastest lap of the race at 51.49 seconds. After his final pit stop, he embarked on a relentless charge, erasing a 15-second deficit to challenge Payne in the closing laps. Despite his efforts, Payne's defensive driving, particularly through the hairpin and Turn 6, secured his third win of the season in one of the closest finishes in Supercars history.
"That was a pretty cool race, man," Payne remarked post-race. "The car held onto its tyres really well. We ran four greens, which helped. Once I got through the hairpin, I knew I could cover him down the back. It's so good to win here; we've struggled so much, and it's definitely hard work pays off."
Feeney, despite the narrow loss, extended his championship lead over teammate Will Brown, who finished third. The race also saw early leader James Golding finish fourth, ahead of PremiAir Racing teammate Richie Stanaway. Cam Waters, who started strong, slipped to 12th, allowing Payne to overtake him for third in the championship standings.
The dramatic conclusion in Tasmania adds to the 2025 season's reputation for delivering intense competition and strategic battles. With the championship lead changing hands multiple times and several races decided by razor-thin margins, fans are witnessing one of the most exhilarating seasons in recent memory.
The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship continues with the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440 from June 6-8, where drivers will look to build on their momentum and vie for crucial points in the tightly contested standings.
