Toyota Unveils GR Supra Supercar Ahead of 2026 Supercars Entry

Toyota has officially lifted the covers on its long-awaited Gen3 GR Supra Supercar, unveiling the machine during the Repco Bathurst 1000 launch in Sydney. The debut marks a landmark moment for both the Japanese manufacturer and Australian motorsport, with Toyota confirming its entry into the Repco Supercars Championship from 2026.

The entry will feature six cars split across powerhouse squads Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) and Brad Jones Racing (BJR). It represents Toyota’s first foray into Supercars competition, following decades of involvement in Australian motorsport at various levels.

The Supra project was first teased at the 2023 Bathurst 1000 when a full-size clay model was presented just weeks after Toyota’s plans became public. Since then, Toyota, WAU, and Supercars have worked intensively to transform the concept into a race-ready reality. The result is the “Supracar,” a machine that retains the classic proportions of Toyota’s most celebrated sports car, powered by a new 5.2-litre V8 engine.

Testing of the prototype has already begun, with Supercars Hall of Famer Neil Crompton giving the Supra its first run at Toyota’s Altona facility. A comprehensive testing program across Australian circuits will follow, with parity work in wind tunnels and dynos ensuring the Supra is ready to line up against Chevrolet’s Camaro and Ford’s Mustang in early 2026.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sean Hanley described the unveiling as a “fantastic day for Toyota, GR and for Supercars,” emphasising the importance of motorsport in the company’s DNA. “The GR Supra will make for an exciting addition to the grid, and we can’t wait to see it in action,” Hanley said. “This is the culmination of years of planning and it elevates Toyota’s proud motorsport history in Australia.”

The announcement was warmly received by WAU and BJR. WAU Director Ryan Walkinshaw hailed the moment as “surreal,” highlighting the effort poured into the project. “To see it in the flesh is a momentous day for all involved,” he said. BJR’s Brad Jones echoed those sentiments, calling the Supra’s transformation from concept to reality “nothing short of exceptional.”

Following the Sydney reveal, the GR Supra Supercar will head to Mount Panorama, where it will be displayed and perform demonstration laps during the 2025 Bathurst 1000. Toyota has committed to at least five years in Supercars, with excitement already building ahead of its 2026 debut.
