Acosta Strikes First as Buriram Sprint Ends in Last-Corner Drama
If there were any questions about whether MotoGP could deliver immediately in 2026, they were answered within thirteen explosive laps at Buriram.
The opening Sprint of the season produced everything lead changes, crashes, controversy and a final-corner decision that crowned Pedro Acosta as the newest race winner and, for the first time in his career, championship leader.

The early stages belonged to Marco Bezzecchi.
Fresh from claiming pole position, the Aprilia rider immediately looked comfortable at the front despite pressure from reigning World Champion Marc Marquez. Their opening exchanges set the tone for the race, with multiple position changes in the opening laps and aggressive but controlled racing.
Bezzecchi initially appeared to have the pace to escape.
That changed instantly.
While defending the lead through Turn 8, the Italian lost the front and crashed out, ending what had looked like a dominant weekend. In one moment, the race completely transformed.

Marquez inherited the lead, but Pedro Acosta had already arrived.
The KTM rider immediately attached himself to the back of the Ducati and began applying pressure. Every lap followed a similar pattern Acosta would dive forward under brakes and Marquez would use Ducati’s acceleration and positioning to fight back.
The first challenge came.
Then another.
Then another.
Each attack became more aggressive as the laps counted down.
Acosta finally began finding ways to stay alongside for longer and forced Marquez into defensive riding rather than outright pace management. The battle quickly became personal, with neither rider willing to concede even a fraction of track position.
Everything exploded on the penultimate lap.
Acosta forced his way through after a mistake from Marquez and looked set to finally break clear. But the response came immediately. Marquez launched another attack into the final sector and contact between the two riders pushed Acosta wide.
Race control acted quickly.
A one-position penalty was issued to Marquez before the final lap was complete.
The Ducati rider delayed serving it until the final corner, slowing just enough to hand Acosta the lead before immediately attempting one final attack to reclaim victory.
It wasn’t enough.
Acosta crossed the line to secure his first Sprint victory and write a new chapter for KTM, while Marc Marquez settled for second and Raul Fernandez completed an impressive podium result for Trackhouse.
One race into 2026 and MotoGP already has its first rivalry of the season.
