Verstappen Dominates at Baku as Piastri Crashes and Norris Misses Big Opportunity
The 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix delivered one of the most dramatic weekends of the season, as Max Verstappen turned pole position into a commanding victory, while McLaren’s title contenders suffered contrasting fortunes that reshaped the championship fight. In a race defined by high speed, high drama and high stakes, it was the Red Bull driver who led from lights to chequered flag to reignite his season and reduce the gap to the championship lead.

The trouble began early for Oscar Piastri, the McLaren championship leader, who endured a miserable weekend in Baku. After crashing in qualifying and starting ninth, Piastri compounded his woes at the Grand Prix start by jumping the start, an error that activated the anti-stall and dropped him to the back of the field. On just the opening lap, Piastri then locked his tyres into Turn 5 and collided heavily with the barrier, ending his race within minutes and leaving the paddock stunned by the severity of the mistake. Piastri later described his errors as “silly” and self inflicted, emphasising that poor judgement in low-grip conditions was to blame.

With his title rival out of contention, McLaren’s other driver, Lando Norris, had an opportunity to capitalise. Norris, starting seventh and running in the points, aimed to close the championship gap. However, a slow pit stop and difficulty overtaking in Baku’s tight airflow zones limited his progress, and he ultimately finished seventh, gaining just six points on Piastri. While Norris insisted he had maximised his performance given the circumstances, the result was nevertheless a missed opportunity to significantly erode his team-mate’s lead.
That left Verstappen to take full advantage. The Red Bull driver executed a flawless race, controlling pace, managing tyres and extending his advantage to finish well clear of the field. Behind him, George Russell recovered strongly to finish second for Mercedes, while Carlos Sainz brought Williams its first podium of the season with a third-place finish, celebrating a major achievement for the Grove squad.
The championship ramifications were immediate. Piastri, despite scoring no points, kept a healthy lead over Norris now reduced to 25 points and Verstappen’s victory ensured he remained in the broader title conversation with a diminished but still substantial deficit. Teams and drivers now head into the final seven races of 2025 focused on consistency and error-free execution, knowing that every point gained or lost in Baku could prove pivotal in the battle for both titles.
